Nokia Buys Symbian

Nokia, the largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world, have announced that they will buy the remaining 52% of Symbian they don’t own and will be releasing the complete Symbian platform under the Eclipse open source license.

“It offers us an opportunity to innovate faster on a more united and accepted platform said Kai Oistamo, head of Nokia’s device business. “It also allows us deliver new products to market faster.”

Symbian is present in approximately two thirds of smartphones (mobile capabilities similar to those of a small computer) market, and 6 per cent of all mobile and has its closest rival in the Windows Mobile from Microsoft, although open source platforms as Google Android or Apple iPhone could challenge his leadership.
